Protecting Your Sport Brand Through Intellectual Property and Integrity

MSLA’s Annual Seminar aims to provide insight and discussion on a burgeoning area of sports law. The topic for 2020 centred on the protection of sporting brands through intellectual property and integrity.

We were proud to host:
  • Iain Roy – CEO at SIGPA: Sports Integrity & Governance Partners; and
  • Tim Golder – Intellectual Property Partner at Allens

​The speakers, leaders in their respective fields, offered robust insight into Australia’s sport integrity landscape and the importance of intellectual property for sporting brands.

Off the Field is our online series of video interviews with leading experts in the sports law industry. We discuss their role, pathway into the industry, challenges they currently face with respect to COVID-19 and much more!

We had the pleasure of speaking with: 
  • Scott Ogilvie – Legal Counsel at Melbourne Storm;
  • Simon Bishop – Head of Integrity at Basket Australia;
  • Margot Foster – Director, Board and Governance specialist, Olympian and lawyer; and
  • Derek Humphrey-Smith – Workplace Relations & Safety Partner and Head of International at Lander & Rogers

Women in Sports Law

Our all-star panel provided a robust discussion and great insight into careers in the sports law field, with an emphasis on being a female lawyer in this sector and current legal issues facing women in sport more generally. 

We were delighted to hear from:
  • Dr Catherine Ordway – Associate Professor at the University of Canberra (Sports Management) and experienced sport lawyer;
  • Amelia Lynch – Head of the Sport and Leisure Group and Partner at Lander & Rogers; and
  • Ella Wallwork – Associate at HFW Melbourne

MSLA Launch & Careers Evening

MSLA's launch night focused on providing an insight into the experiences of a lawyer in the sport industry and giving students a glimpse of the different sport related career paths available.

The panel featured:
  • Paul Horvath – Principal at Paul Horvath Solicitor's;
  • Molina Asthana – Principal at Swarup Asthana Lawyers and Business Advisors and experienced board director;
  • Amy Jennings – Senior Legal Counsel: Oceania at The IRONMAN Group; and
